The Green Flag is Flying …

Well done to everyone who was involved in getting the Green Flag Award for the school, especially Valerie Collins and Sinead Cuffe and their committee.  The children all participated in a recycling project as part of this process and came up with some fantastic masterpieces!  Instead of giving prizes it was agreed that because so much work had gone into them, all the children were winners and were rewarded with a sports day with no uniforms or homework.  They really enjoyed this which happened last week.  There was a surprise visit from an icecream van too:)

Here we see Valerie, Sinead, Cillian and Anna receiving the flag which is now flying in the school along with the health promoting one!  We will need more flag poles at the rate we are going:)

School Sports a great success

Despite a forecast of rain, the annual school sports held on the 24th April, turned out to be a lovely sunny evening.  MC, Ger Healy, kicked off the evening at 6 p.m. sharp and efficiently went through all the races from Tiny Tots to Over 12’s.  There were 100 metre sprints, 220 metres, 440 metres, relays, long jump, sack race, 3-legged race and tug-of-war so something for everyone!  Gurrane did really well overall and came away with a good few individual medals but also came 1st in the Parish Relay and 1st in the Open Relay so well done to all the athletes who took part.  The final event of the evening was the tug-of-war.  Gurrane made it to the final against Glasheen  Boys National School and amazingly the boys from Glasheen have won this for 30 years in a row so congratulations to them and we look forward to having them back again next year.  We might beat them yet!

Upcoming Events

Don’t forget the clothes collection – please drop your unwanted clothes and shoes to the School before 23rd April.

Also, the annual Gurrane National School Sports will be held on the 24th April in Valley Rovers facilities in Brinny!  Get practising:)

Ready, Steady Go!

And they are off ……..  The annual School Walk took place last Sunday.  Nearly all of the children and parents took part on a lovely sunny afternoon.  Mr. O’Leary led the way on this 5 km route along lovely country roads near the school.  It’s a great social occasion too, with refreshments after the exertions of the day.  It was great to see many of the Past Pupils joining us and a great sign of the school that these kids like to return to their old school!  All the children got an Easter Egg for their efforts:)

Sponsorship cards must be returned by this Friday, 13th March.  Your support is appreciated.

One, two, three and one two, three – No, it’s not counting, it’s Irish Dancing

Fionan Cogan has recently started teaching the children Irish Dancing.  The whole school gets to learn from Junior Infants to 6th Class, which is fantastic as many of them would not get to experience this outside of school hours.  They’ve been learning “Shoe the Donkey” and many more.  The will be ready for the Feis’s soon:)  Here they are in action!

It’s Magic at the Toddler Morning!

The last Toddler Morning session was held on Saturday 7th March.  And what fun the children had!  There was a magic show and Charlie volunteered as the assistant:)  We were lucky he didn’t disappear!  This was followed by a super puppet show and if that wasn’t enough there was then some disco dancing at the end:)  So this concludes our Free Toddler Mornings now, but watch this space for updates on others that will take place probably later in the year again!
