Christmas started early at the 2nd Toddler Morning
Look at the children enjoying themselves at the second Toddler Morning held on Saturday 29th November. The theme for the morning was Christmas decorations. Here you can seem some of the great work done by the children. Each child took home their decorated Santa Claus mask, Christmas stocking and home-made cards.
The final Toddler Morning will be in February and the puppet show will be back by popular demand!

Knockavilla Friendship Club on tour!
Last Thursday, 27th November, a bus load of members of the Knockavilla Friendship Club, accompanied by Fr. Finbarr and Fr. Seamus, arrived at the school to be entertained for the morning. The children sang lots of lovely songs and played a wide variety of instruments from keyboard, tin whistle, guitar, violin, drums and even bells!! The teachers showed off their musical skills too!! What an amazing range of talent. The morning ended as is customary in West Cork with tea and a chat. The school looks forward to seeing the Friendship Club again.
2 celebrities in Gurrane School!
Cliona Reardon and Rhian Dawkins continue on their path to fame. They not only featured on the Evening Echo yesterday where they were interviewed about their forthcoming appearance on the Late Late Toy Show, but they were live on 96fm this morning with P.J. Coogan. They also got a chance to show off their fabulous voices when they sang “Do you want to be a Snowman” from the hit movie Frozen.
Don’t forget to watch them on RTE tonight!
A fun night at the Table Quiz
The Table Quiz organised by the Parents Association, was held on Friday 21st November. There was almost a full house at the Crossbarry Inn so it was great to see all the parents, their friends, Mrs. Tallon and some of the local community taking part. John Wall, as usual, did a fantastic job as Quiz Master. The questions were varied with a few trick ones thrown in! A presentation was made to John at the end of the night to mark his 10th year as Quiz Master. He was delighted with this, particularly with a card signed by all the children in the school!.
First place went to Sean Michael and Valerie Collins & Derek and Martina McCarthy. Coming in second were Orla O’Mahony’s team and not far behind in Third place were Sean and Linda Lynch and Declan and Mairead O’Mahoney. Well done to all the prizewinners and a huge thank you to them for donating their prizemoney back to the school.
Great fun at Toddler Morning
The first Toddler Morning was held on 8th November. The Junior Classroom teacher, Mrs. Tallon, did a great animated story telling session on the Gingerbread Man. This was followed by decorating some baked gingerbread men, kindly provided by Noreen Healy. Their was great fun putting on icing, marshmallows, smarties and lots more. Thanks to all the parents and teachers who helped on the day.
The next one is on the 29th November and the children will be making Christmas decorations!
Late Late Toy Show Stars!
Marymount Coffee Morning
Gurrane National School would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and all those who attended a coffee morning in the school to raise funds for Marymount. It was a lovely day with a great atmosphere. A special thank you to the children for doing the baking who were helped by their teachers! A total of €517 was raised and a cheque was presented to Marymount on 19th November. Well done to everyone involved.
Science Fair in Cork City Hall
A group of 25 children from 3rd to 6th class, Mr. O’Leary, and two parents (Noreen Healy and Jean Humphreys) headed off in a bus on 17th November to attend Discovery 2014 in Cork City Hall. There were a number of stands on display to include Lifetime Lab, Learn it Lego, CIT/Blackrock Castle Observatory, CIT, UCC, Defence Forces, Tundall National Institute, Engineers Ireland, Trend Micro and Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre. Discovery is a main partner in Science Week Ireland and one of the biggest events in the Irish science calendar.
The children attended the Cork Electronics Industry Association Workshop where they spend a half an hour putting circuits together – some had voice recordings, lights, music, etc. It was very good practical, hands-on experience for them and they had great fun assembling them.
A highlight for them was the popcorn they got after they watched a video on being safe on the internet.
It was a lovely event to attend and the children were a credit to the school.
