It’s Magic at the Toddler Morning!

The last Toddler Morning session was held on Saturday 7th March.  And what fun the children had!  There was a magic show and Charlie volunteered as the assistant:)  We were lucky he didn’t disappear!  This was followed by a super puppet show and if that wasn’t enough there was then some disco dancing at the end:)  So this concludes our Free Toddler Mornings now, but watch this space for updates on others that will take place probably later in the year again!

A fun night at the Table Quiz

The Table Quiz organised by the Parents Association, was held on Friday 21st November.  There was almost a full house at the Crossbarry Inn so it was great to see all the parents, their friends, Mrs. Tallon and some of the local community taking part.  John Wall, as usual, did a fantastic job as Quiz Master.  The questions were varied with a few trick ones thrown in!  A presentation was made to John at the end of the night to mark his 10th year as Quiz Master.  He was delighted with this, particularly with a card signed by all the children in the school!.

First place went to Sean Michael and Valerie Collins &  Derek and Martina McCarthy. Coming in second were Orla O’Mahony’s team and not far behind in Third place were Sean and Linda Lynch and Declan and Mairead O’Mahoney.  Well done to all the prizewinners and a huge thank you to them for donating their prizemoney back to the school.

Science Fair in Cork City Hall

A group of 25 children from 3rd to 6th class, Mr. O’Leary, and two parents (Noreen Healy and Jean Humphreys) headed off in a bus on 17th November to attend Discovery 2014 in Cork City Hall.  There were a number of stands on display to include Lifetime Lab, Learn it Lego, CIT/Blackrock Castle Observatory, CIT, UCC, Defence Forces, Tundall National Institute, Engineers Ireland, Trend Micro and Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre.  Discovery is a main partner in Science Week Ireland and one of the biggest events in the Irish science calendar.

The children attended the Cork Electronics Industry Association Workshop where they spend a half an hour putting circuits together – some had voice recordings, lights, music, etc.  It was very good practical, hands-on experience for them and they had great fun assembling them.

A highlight for them was the popcorn they got after they watched a video on being safe on the internet.

It was a lovely event to attend and the children were a credit to the school.

Communion Information

The first meeting was held in Knockavilla Church on 24th September for all parents of the children from Gurrane, Castlelack and Knockavilla schools who are making their First Holy Communion on 16th May 2015.

At this meeting Fr. Finbarr advised that he doesn’t follow the “Do this in Memory Programme”.  The children would bring gifts to the altar each Sunday.  A Committee was selected – 1 or 2 parents from each school.  Jean Humphreys is the representative from Gurrane School. This Committee would meeting a few times during the year to make arrangements for the Communion Celebration.

The First meeting was held on 8th October.  Parents from the Innishannon Communion Committee also attended so that the arrangements would be the same for all schools in the Parish.  At the meeting it was agreed that each child would be encouraged to set up an altar at home and that it would be nice to say a family prayer once a week.  Fr. Finbarr will provided suggested prayers.  Some of the items on their altars will be blessed at Mass.  Fr. Finbarr will be calling to all the schools to let the children know what would be happening.

There are 3 children from Gurrane N.S. making their First Holy Communion in May and they have already taken the gifts up twice.  Their next date is 26th October.  A rota is currently being made out up to August 2015 and this will be available after next week-end.

The Enrolment Day will be 16th November.  Suggestions for gifts for the altar were a baptismal candle or a picture of a deceased family member.
